Near to Ivybridge, Bittaford Wood Park Home has a magnificent rural setting on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. This settlement boasts centuries of history, both as a mill town and a staging post on the route from London.
The fast flowing river Erme has always been the lifeblood of the town. Originally providing power for the mills – one of which still exists – it now mirrors the walks south along the Erme Valley Trail and North to Dartmoor. At the northern end of the town centre is the medieval packhorse bridge, an original ivy bridge that has been painted by many artists including Turner. Upstream, the Victorian railway viaduct spans the valley and provides a striking backdrop to the town. And nearby Longtimber Woods, the pillars remain from original 1848 Brunel structure.
A perfect location for walking enthusiasts, the Erme Valley Trail meanders from Ivybridge to the village of Ermington, following the path of the river through woods and fields. The ERM Plym Trail continues all the way to Wembury on the coast and then right into the heart of Plymouth. There is a walk on the edge of the moors which follows a hidden tramway. Other trails lead to Modbury, a town with Civil War connections and a street called Runaway Lane. A series of Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary Trails follow the edge of the nature reserve in search of wildfowl.
The main bus route from Plymouth to Ivybridge is always close by for those who tire of walking.
From your Bittaford Wood Park Home, it is only a short walk to the local shops, cafes and pubs in Bittaford. For those who like to travel further afield, regular buses stop close to the park entrance with connections to Ivybridge, Totnes and Plymouth. Private garages accompany the homes for those who prefer to keep their own mode of transport.
Other attractions within easy reach are the Pennywell Farm and Wildlife Centre, Salcombe, the South Devon Railway Museum, Buckfast Abbey, and a museum comprising the Devonshire Collection of Period Costume. Totnes is also close by with its Guildhall and Elizabethan House Museum.
