Orton Grange - What's Nearby...

Being only 10 minutes drive from junction 42 of the M6, Orton Grange is perfectly situated for access to many local attractions.

There are shops, a chemist, a doctors’ surgery and a dentist close by and regular buses to Carlisle, a major railway junction with routes to Scotland, London, Newcastle, West Cumbria and the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway, stop just outside the park.

Golf courses, lawn green bowling and a leisure centre are all within easy reach. For fishing enthusiasts, the nearby rivers Eden and Esk and their tributaries are well known for their abundance of salmon, sea trout and brown trout. The pretty village of Dalston is only 3 minutes away from the park with good pubs, restaurants and shopping.

Four miles further on lies Carlisle, the Great Border City, dominating the Borderlands of England and Scotland. Here you will find yourself at the centre of a stirring past and a vibrant present. Stroll through the historic heart of the city from the Castle to the Cathedral then onto Tullie House Museum, or simply take your time browsing the shops and sampling what the local restaurants have to offer. From the national award-winning restaurants to gastro pubs and cafes, the Carlisle area offers the best in food and drink, day or night. From the clear Lakeland water in local beer to the renowned Lakeland lamb and beef, an abundance of excellent local food combines with international influences to provide for even the most discerning foodies.

Several interesting towns and villages surround Orton Grange Park. Drive down the coast to Maryport and visit the marina and aquarium, discovering links with the ill-fated Titanic and Fletcher Christian of 'Mutiny on the Bounty'. Workington is the area's busy commercial port - visit the Helena Thompson Museum or the ruins of Workington Hall, which once sheltered Mary Queen of Scots. The elegant town of Whitehaven is famous for its 18th century streets of merchants and sea captains houses. Experience the Rum Story exhibition at Jefferson's, the country's oldest family of wine merchants
.
The Solway Firth is an area of outstanding natural beauty, renowned world-wide for its birdlife and spectacular sunsets. Victorian town, Silloth on Solway, with its cobbled streets is famous for its golf links, whilst the seaside village of Allonby, with its award winning beach, is well worth a visit. Inland from the coast is Cockermouth, birthplace of William Wordsworth, Fletcher Christian and John Dalton. Travelling a little further South you will soon reach The Lake District, with its spectacular scenery and cosy tea shops.
